Big Step in Cluj Metro: TBM Launching Shaft Construction Has Started!

As Gülermak, we are delighted to announce a historic step forward in the underground journey of the Cluj-Napoca Metro. As of August 11, construction has officially commenced on the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch shaft, a critical structure at the heart of the metro tunnels, with the participation of the Mayor of Cluj-Napoca, Mr. Emil Boc.

Located in Florești, near Teilor Station, this large-scale facility will accommodate two TBMs simultaneously, enabling the excavation of the line’s two parallel tunnels. The construction of the launch shaft is of paramount importance, as it requires the precise alignment of diaphragm walls and the guide structure with the planned tunnel route, while ensuring optimal conditions for lowering and assembling the TBM equipment underground.

The Cluj Napoca Metro Line will span over 21 kilometers of light metro infrastructure, comprising 19 underground stations, one above-ground depot, and twin tunnel galleries running the length of the route.

The project aims to reduce surface traffic congestion, lower emissions, and enhance urban living quality, contributing to the city’s sustainable transformation.
The Cluj-Napoca Metro also holds special significance as the first metro project developed in a Romanian city outside the capital, Bucharest.
